[Business France] Exceptional SAINT-EMILION – POMEROL – FRONSAC Wines from Bordeaux Matched with Chinese PU’ER Teas at Vinexpo Hong Kong 2016 (24-26 May) [fr] [中文]

The renowned Saint-Emilion – Pomerol – Fronsac region in Bordeaux hosted 3 exclusive wine masterclasses and a press luncheon during Vinexpo Hong Kong 2016 (24-26 May). Local specialists and media had the opportunity to discover the wines’ specificities from the right bank of Bordeaux, and explore the surprising similarities between these wines and two teas from Pu’Er, the Chinese city with which Libourne, main city of the Saint-Emilion – Pomerol – Fronsac region, was twinned in 2012.

JPEGSaint-Emilion – Pomerol – Fronsac: Diverse Terroirs & Rich Wine-Making History

Situated on the right bank of the river Dordogne to the northeast of Bordeaux, the Saint-Emilion – Pomerol – Fronsac region, home to more than 1,700 winemakers spanning 13,000 hectares, is divided into 10 prestigious AOC appellations: Saint-Emilion, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Lussac Saint-Emilion, Puisseguin Saint-Emilion, Montagne Saint-Emilion, Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion, Pomerol, Lalande de Pomerol, Fronsac and Canon Fronsac.

With its signature terroir – the holy trinity of multiple soil combinations (various types of limestone, clay, gravel and sand blended together in an infinite array of composites), favourable microclimate (typical Bordeaux temperate oceanic weather, tempered by continental conditions and the two rivers, the Isle and the Dordogne) and gently undulating landscape (alternating between flat areas and hillsides), the region has identified 3 grape varieties which are perfectly adapted to produce exceptional wines:

  • Fruitiness of Merlot: accounting for 80% of the vines planted in Pomerol, 65 - 80% in Saint-Emilion and 80% in Fronsac;
  • Tannins of Cabernet Franc: accounting for 20 - 30% of all vines planted in the region;
  • Spiciness of Cabernet Sauvignon: accounting for up to 10% of the planted vines.

79 millions of bottles are produced every year, with 40% of the production are sold internationally.

Association of Saint-Emilion – Pomerol – Fronsac Wines and Pu’Er Teas

With Libourne and Pu’Er labelled as twin towns since 2012, the Saint-Emilion – Pomerol – Fronsac region and the city in Yunnan are celebrating the similar savoir-faire and refined quality between French wines and Chinese teas, well beyond their geographical distance:

  • same pursuit of quality;
  • same adherence to traditions, values and rituals;
  • similar meticulousness in vines / tea plants growing, grapes / tea leaves sorting and blending;
  • similar concept of “vintage”;
  • similar convivial moment of sharing when drinking wine and tea.

In December 2016, a dedicated section of Saint-Emilion – Pomerol – Fronsac wines will be featured in the Museum of the Pu’Er City paying homage to teas and ethnics.
