Climate seminars of the French Glaciologist Jérôme Chappellaz [fr]

Jérôme Chappellaz, Senior Scientist at CNRS, Laboratoire de Glaciologie et Géophysique de l’Environnement, Grenoble, France and scientific advisor of the film “Ice and the sky”, will be back to Hong Kong. One year after his first visit, he will be speaker of two seminars.

The first one, held in English and co-organised by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Consulate general of France in Hong Kong and Macau, will look at the studies about the climate past of the earth: «SUBGLACIOR and ICE MEMORY : when the past and the future meet through two ice coring projects».

This seminar will take place after the closing ceremony of the exhibition of Universcience « Climate Change 360° » which is held until 18 November at Stephen Hui Geological Museum of HKU.

SUBGLACIOR and ICE MEMORY : when the past and the future meet through two ice coring projects

"Ice core science has been key to improve our understanding of the climate system at different time scales and to put in perspective the human impact. Through two new projects, the team currently extends the spectrum of information to be deciphered from these unique natural archives made of snow and ice accumulated through time.
The first one is called SUBGLACIOR : it aims at probing the Antarctic ice sheet over possibly 3 kilometers of ice thickness, within only one to two months, in search for the oldest ice on the planet. With an embarked laser spectrometer in the probe, the history of climate back to 1.5 million years ago is hoped to be accessed straight from the field.
The second project is called ICE MEMORY : with this project, they drill heritage ice cores from mountain glaciers being under threat due to global warming, to store them on the very long term in Antarctica for the next generations of ice core scientists.
Through this presentation, Jerome Chappellaz will address the main reasons motivating these projects as well as some of the challenges to overcome."

Another seminar which talks about the use and the role of methane hydrate for a more sustainable growth, will be held in French: « Les hydrates de méthane : rêve énergétique ou cauchemar climatique ? »

About Dr. Jérôme Chappellaz

Dr. Jérôme Chappellaz Research Director, First Class, at the CNRS and former Deputy Director of the LGGE laboratory, Jérôme Chappellaz is an expert in the evolution of greenhouse gases within the atmosphere on various time scales. He coordinates French research surrounding ice cores drilled in polar regions and he represents France in international committees for this scientific field. He has taken part in eight expeditions in Antarctica and Greenland, and he is currently leading an ambitious project from the European Research Council (ERC).

Jérôme Chappellaz has published more than 160 articles, including 118 in peer-reviewed journals and more than 20 in the prestigious journals Nature and Science. For more than a decade now, the impact of his publications has placed him in the select category of the most highly cited researchers in geosciences worldwide (http://www.jerome-chappellaz.com). A Knight of the French National Order of Merit, Jérôme Chappellaz has notably received among various prizes and awards the CNRS Bronze Medal in 1993 and the Silver Medal in 2015, the Jaffé Award from the French Académie des Sciences in 2001, the Shackleton Medal for scientific innovation from the European Association of Geochemistry in 2013, and the Niels Bohr Institute Medal of Honour in 2014.
