The Hong Kong Academy of Sciences (ASHK) was officially inaugurated on December 5, 2015, by the Chief Executive of HKSAR, Hon CY Leung, the Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Minister of Science and Technology of China, Prof Wan Gang, and the President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof Bai Chunli.

While Hong Kong is emerging on the international scene in the field of Science and Technology, its Academy of Sciences (ASHK) has been inaugurated at the "Government House "on December 5, 2015.

Opening the ceremony, Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, president of the ASHK, and Hon CY LEUNG have welcomed the culmination of several years of work leading to its creation and reminded the objectives of the Academy, which identifies and honors the most recognized Hong Kong researchers and international researchers who contributed to the scientific recognition of Hong Kong:
- to promote the development and advancement of science and technology in Hong Kong,
- to promote of the education of science and technology in Hong Kong,
- to inform the public on issues pertaining to science and technology, and
- to foster Hong Kong as a center of scientific excellence.

This prestigious Academy gathers already 27 leading international scientists

Note that among the 27 founding members they are two renown French scientists, Professor Jean-Marie Lehn (Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1987 , professor at the University of Strasbourg) and Professor Philippe Ciarlet ( Member of the French Academy of Sciences , professor at the City University of Hong Kong).

Representing the European Research Area and the French Academy of Sciences, respectively, Professor Jean Pierre Bourguignon, a renown French mathematician and President of the "European Research Council" and Professor Jean Salençon, former President of the French Academy of Sciences, beside Prof.Bai Chunli, President of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Chi-Huey Wong, President of the "Academia Sinica" of Taiwan, Prof. Anthony Cheetham, Vice President and Treasurer of the Royal British Society and Prof. Ronald Graham, representing the American Academy of Sciences, gave their testimony and their congratulatory remarks.

Mrs Liliana Ciarlet, Prof Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, Dr Isabelle SAVES, Mr Eric Berti, , Consul General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, Prof Philippe Ciarlet, Prof Jean Salençon, Mrs Anne Denis-Blanchardon.

Among its activities, ASHK will host conferences to promote knowledge exchange between academic and the industry, particularly the translation of scientific discoveries to application, and to increase the awareness of local needs and challenges among the scientists.

In this spirit topromote science and technology development in Hong Kong, ASHK held its first Science and Technology Innovation Summit on December 6th, 2015 at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park in Shatin in the wake of the inauguration of this "young" Academy of Sciences.

Guests and renowned scientists - including some founding members of the ASHK, such as Professors Dennis Lo (The Chinese University of Hong Kong), Malik Peiris (The University of Hong Kong - HKU-Pasteur Research Pole) and Ching W Tang (The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) - shared their experience of cutting-edge research and discoveries and their impact on society.

Previously, eminent representatives of foreign Academies of Sciences or international research institutions had discussed about the links between Science and Society. Professor Jean Pierre Bourguignon, gave evidence on the European perspective on stimulating innovation, and Professor Jean Salençon explained the role for the community of the French Academy of Sciences.

At this first summit, local leaders from different sectors were also invited to discuss their views and experience.
